my personal project

Lesson Plan On "Zotero"

National Standards:
-Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health.

Students Will Be Able To:
-Learn and use a new technology in order to enhance class assignments and personal knowledge.
-Work together to produce a successful collaborative project.

Materials:
-Computer with internet access.

Procedures:

1. Go to http://www.zotero.org/ and download Zotero as an add-on to firefox, you will have to restart firefox.

2. You will need to register for an account, which involves accessing an activation code from your e-mail.

3. To aid in your research you can search groups that are already made for any topics you need.
4. When you click on a group that interests you look at the group library for articles that other members have posted there. This will allow you to quickly decide if this source will be helpful to you and if it is everything is cited for you.
5. You and your partners will be creating a group so that while you do your own separate research everyone will be updated. It would be smart to read the same articles and make sure that all of your facts are accurate and completely cited.
5. Whoever creates the group will need to choose the proper settings, including what category your group falls under and who has access to it.
6. Installing Zotero allows you to access a toolbar that appears at the bottom of any firefox screen. Pull up the toolbar after you find an article that you would like to be a part of your group library.
7. Sync to Zotero so that your group libraries appear in your sidebar. Add the article to your Zotero toolbar and drag it into your group library.
8. Now, when you log in to Zotero and look at your group libarary you will see the article there.
9. Finally, Zotero has several options for helping you to create a bibliography. Left-flick on the article and select the option you want.
Assessment: Have students turn in paper with their group information and tell them you will monitor their groups and expect to see progress.

I have more or less successfully created a class website for my future health class.
Here is the link:

internet safety

I finished my iSafe training!! I'm excited to be able to teach these things to my future students in hopes that I can help them work towards a safer cyberspace. I hope through sharing real stories about the hazards of the web students will realize how important it is to keep themselves safe online.

copyright

This assignment has really opened my eyes to all the pitfalls someone could fall into when producing what seems to be innocent multimedia productions.

This is my first find:

My first reaction is that this baby is so cute! But, that's just what I think. With over five million views I realize that many people are watching this video, so its contents are being widely spread. The important thing to notice is that this is more than a dancing baby thug. I would like to give these parents the benefit of the doubt by assuming they purchased their ringtones legally, so they followed copyright laws there. However, they are now letting millions of other people have access to this music by posting this material on the internet. This is allowed on password protected sites, so maybe they should have put this video on their family blog. It doesn't seem worth it, but I suppose if they felt their child had a shot at the music industry these parents would have to purchase the rights to using this music in their video.

Here is my second find:

Aside from the fact that I absolutely love the humor of this commercial, I think it brings up an interesting copyright situation. Kotex uses clips from other tampon commercials to make their point. While I couldn't readily identify what brand each clip came from, there were a few I recognized because I had seen the original commercial. Now, Kotex doesn't flash their competitors brand names across the commercial, but as I said you can tell where the clips are coming from. Since this is a well known brand it is safe to say that they covered all their bases while obtaining these clips. I looked on the Kotex website and read over their legal information, and they are very clear about what may be used and how it should be used and what they have used. So, addressing how I found this video on youtube I know that it was not a violation of copyright laws for this user to post it. I know this because the Kotex website states that those interested may use their resources in their original fashion--which is how this video is.

blogs i have subscribed to...

I subscribed to a blog about how Health Education Ignores Sexuality because that is a controversial topic in my subject area. State standards vary and I think it's interesting to hear different opinions. This one is from an Atlanta newspaper. As a health educator I think it's important to stay open minded and be willing to keep learning so that you may become a better teacher.

I subscribed to the blog of a student in this class who is also a School Health Education major. Most of my subscriptions are to blogs about health, but this person provided a lot of links about using technology. My subscribing to their blog I am able to have that access without having to find them all myself.

I subscribed to a PBS teachers resource blog. I like this because it has a lot of posts and is very reliable information. I think PBS has always been a valuable source of knowledge for educators, so this blog provides me with lots of different resources for improving my teaching skills. It also addresses somewhat political issues I might not otherwise be aware of.

I subscribed to The Health Care Blog as well. Being that my emphasis is health education I liked the idea of having a stream of posts just about health care in general. This blog can keep me up to date on some of the more political issues revolving around health care, which is especially important considering the latest health care reform. As I begin my teaching career I will need to be somewhat well versed in this.

I subscribed to Web MD, which is a website I've used often in my daily life, so I feel familiar with it. This site provides health information that is easily accessible and easily understood by the masses. If I just want a quick update on the latest health issues being talked about I can look at this resource.

first attempt

I don't quite understand the purpose of blogs, yet. I do know about a million people who have them and when I remember they exist they are fun to read. So, what are my thoughts about technology right now? Well there are very few, but let's see.
1. Setting this up was very simple, even my mom could probably do it.
2. Picking a theme was somewhat more difficult because there are only a handful of choices. Of course I'm sure the tech savvy are able to create their own themes with their magical html powers.
3. Writing an about me was somewhat awkward and reminds me of my myspace days.
4. Adding a picture was easy enough. Choosing one with family is always a safe bet.
5. Now, after finishing this post, I feel rather accomplished.

Goal: It's now time to tackle gadgets. Not that they're hard to figure out, I just think they look funny once they're on my blog.

-Taylor

I will now practice some fancy outsourcing: A little more about me is that I consider following meaningless celebrity gossip one of my hobbies.
